by Stephen Crowe 2013 was the year of the slicked back and beard combo. Classic cuts favoured the catwalks with short back and sides complimenting a slick quiff. 2014 promises to bring about a slight change in style for the man do. I’m pretty sure the slick quiff is here to stay for a wee bit longer but it’s also paved the way for edgier styles and I have to say, if my predictions are correct (and they usually are) I am super excited about what’s to come. 90’s Fringe That popular 90’s style is back with a vengeance. During the SS2014 catwalks it featured heavily in brands like Burberry Prorsum, TopMan and Calvin Klein and has been seen on young stars like Zac Efron, Louis Tomlinson and Jaymi Hensley. The style has been modernised this time round and a more textured version is preferred over the softer boyish finish previously adorned. The Disheveled Indie THEGAYUK FEB/MARCH Women’s hair trends tend to dramatically change from one year to the next where as men’s hairstyles rarely change at all. This aside 2013 was a great year for men both in hairstyles and fashion. We are making bolder statements and are more willing to take a chance to stand out from the crowd without worrying about sacrificing our masculinity. Well done us. 2014 GROOMING Think of a scruffy indie boy who’s been forced to at least finger comb his hair and you’ve got the disheveled look down to a T. This is one of my personal faves as I am one lazy git and this style takes little to no prep time. Winning! Dolce & Gabbana and Prada both favoured this style during the SS2014 shows. Niall Haran and R Patz have rocked this style for a while and Joey Essex sported a smarter version during the 2014 National TV award show; looking as hot as James Dean did back in the day. The Manly Mane Usually a style reserved for hardcore rockers but long hair has made a cool come back thanks to medieval TV like Game of Thrones and Musketeers. Chris Hemsworth topless during Thor probably helped as well (So hot!) and edgy brands YMC and Rick Owen loved long locks on men during the SS2014 fashion shows. Getting past the awkward stages of hair growth, and yes there are more than one, can be taxing but I truly believe every man should have long hair at least once in their lives. There you have it! My predictions for men’s hair trends during 2014! A FINAL WORD No matter what style you choose hair care is truly important. Shampoo and condition you’re locks to keep them thick and healthy and if like me you’re working on The Manly Mane I have a tip for you. Massage Moroccan oil into your scalp, this creates circulation and promotes hair growth. ∎ Photos by T&G www.tonyandguy.com 117
