Looking Back To Move Forward: Where Next For Assassin’s Creed? Ancient Rome/Egypt Napoleonic Europe By far the most requested (or demanded) setting for the series. Ancient Rome is such a well-versed and well-recorded segment of Human history that it’d be easy and undeniably cool to form a brilliant yarn out of it. With Assassin’s Creed IV taking time back a short step, there’s no reason to suggest that Ubisoft wouldn’t take players even further back. Playing as an ex-Roman soldier or perhaps a champion Gladiator would certainly mix things up a bit, and the wealth of historical figures is incredible. The first Roman civil war would be the ideal time point, with characters like Julius Ceasar, Mark Antony and Cleopatra to provide the classic AC cameos. Talk about a time of conflict and social upheaval. This links in with the Revolutionary America theme of ACIII, and so would form a natural fit for the next game. With the American setting, we’ve seen Ubisoft open up the patches of land that your assassin can cover, so why not have the whole of Western Europe as a playground? The key cities of the Napoleonic era, such as Paris, Vienna, Warsaw and London would all be ideal locations for beautiful, but also fully playable environments. Interestingly, the director for ACIV, Ashraf Ismail, recently noted that he wanted to take the series to Egypt. Of course, the nation has a rich and diverse history, but I think it’d work perfectly alongside a Roman setting. Not the most likely, but certainly one of the coolest ideas. Assassin’s Creed Special Edition 2013 As with ancient Rome, it’d also be an ideal setting character-wise. Figures like the Duke of Wellington, Gebhard von Blucher and Napoleon himself would be fascinating to see blended in to the ever changing world of Assassin’s Creed. As I mentioned, it wouldn’t be a far cry from the past games, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see this arise some time in the future. Bonus points if Richard Sharpe is included! 62 • GameOn Magazine
