Wayne: Throughout the years has your writing style changed? If so, what do you feel the biggest change was? Ev: As a band and as a lyricist I feel both have matured. I feel like this record is Mindset at its most realized state. We’ve been playing and writing together for enough time that we’ve really developed our own sound. Obviously we’re not afraid to show our influences on our sleeves but this record sounds like Mindset. The lyrical attitude is Mindset. When we were younger we’d try to emulate our favorite bands and write songs that sounded like bands we loved, this record avoids those cliches. Granted, this record is fast and raw and snotty like all of our records, but the approach is sharper and more focused. We also set out to write an LP, not just a collection of songs. I think that encouraged us to write differently, and challenged us to write better songs. As for lyrics specifically, I think I’ve become more comfortable with how I perceive myself and how I perceive the world. The confusion I have at 26 is different than it was when I was 20 or 21. Not completely different, but evolved. Things aren’t as simple anymore. I used to see things as black and white and now I find myself floating in this sea of grey and I don’t even know how I got here. Some of the lyrics are so personal I found myself second guessing whether or not I was comfortable recording them. Less introspective lyrics address complex issues without drifting into complex language. I think overall the whole record is
incredible accessible. I hope some songs address issues in a way people hadn’t considered before and I hope others help people deal with their own personal challenges. Also, there are lots of bad ass mosh parts and sing-a-longs.
to know that other people feel similar to you, and that can help create a common bond. Without straight edge, I would just be a dude who acts the way I do now, but with a lot less friends and a less crucial record collection.
