2 | The Funding Tree
elcome back Funding Tree Family! Hopefully the
summer treated you well and you are excited for the 2017-18 school year. While on summer break, Funding and Partnership Services decided to make some changes to the previous Funding Tree format. For example, you are currently reading the Spotlight section, where Funding and Partnerships will “spotlight” an OCDE grant-funded program. Take a look at the first-ever Spotlight below.
Helping Kids Succeed
Denise Harshman, Ed.D. and Myrtice Salmond, Ed.D. head the annual AVID 9th Grade Leadership Conference thanks to the Orange County Community Foundation and the Draper Family Foundation as part of the Helping Kids Succeed grant. Each year approximately 700 ninth grade AVID students from 22 high schools in fourteen districts participate in a two-day leadership conference that provides students with an opportunity to visit a college campus and nourish their leadership and college literacy skills. As part of the conference, students will be provided t-shirts, lunch, incentives, and transportation. The conference kicks off with a keynote speaker and continues with a campus tour.
For students to get involved, schools must submit a request to attend on a given date. Each school is limited to a maximum of 35 students. Once a school has registered, various criteria are reviewed to see who will attend the conference. For more information on how to get involved, please contact
Denise Harshman, Ed.D. at [email protected]

Con"Grant"ulations
To Instructional Services’ Health Physical Education! They were awarded as a subcontractor on the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Grant to improve access to opportunities for physical activity and healthy food options in the community and improve linkages between health care services and community-level services. Way to go!
To Instructional Services’ Secondary School Support - AVID team! Funding will support disadvantaged teens toward high school graduation, enrollment in post-secondary education, and college graduation. Ninth grade AVID students will have the opportunity to participate in a two-day leadership conference on a college campus where they learn about campus life and how to nourish their college literary skills. Great work!
To Instructional Services’ CTE personnel! This funding allows OCDE to identify 60 students with disabilities and provide them with transition services into career pathways programs and/or post-secondary education. This is a great opportunity for students.
