I know this is a silly question, but is chocolate
good or bad for you? I’ve heard both.
A: Ah, if only it were that simple! Imagine how
many books we’d have sold if this had been
called The Chocolate Diet. Cacao (cocoa) beans
are high in beneficial antioxidants. However,
they’re also more than 50% fat. And we never
eat these cacao beans raw. We add sugar, fat
and milk. Like other things, a little chocolate
from time to time is okay, but eating it every
day is a bad idea.

I s it okay to drink beer
and wine?
A: There’s research to indicate that drinking
one serving per day of beer or wine may be
beneficial in reducing heart attacks. Other
studies show a definite link between alcohol
consumption and an increase in certain
cancers. If you’re drinking one glass of wine
or one bottle of beer per day, you won’t likely
have any related problems. But keep a close eye
on it. As we mentioned earlier, alcohol lowers
inhibitions. It’s easy for one glass of wine per
day to become two glasses, then three,
then . . . you get the idea. Always stop at one.

S
ometimes when I eat sweets or drink alcohol
or coffee, I need to take an antacid. What’s
happening?
A: Sweets, alcohol and coffee contain irritating
acids and they also stimulate the stomach to
over-produce its own acid. This causes stomach
acids to get up into the esophagus where they
don’t belong. This problem is accelerated if
you overeat or you’re overweight. Lying down
too soon after you eat also contributes to the
problem. Stomach acid in the esophagus is
called heartburn or sour stomach. Thus, the
antacids.
Follow-up Q: So how do I stop it?
A: Your body is telling you to quit eating or
drinking the offending foods, especially within
4 hours of lying down to sleep. The Full Plate
Diet™ has been shown to reduce and eliminate
heartburn and sour stomach. Try it.
