Today, one of the most popular spots in town is the Urbana Regional
Library and Senior Center. The library, the second-busiest in the
county, features 25,000 square feet spread over three levels. More
than 90,000 items are available to residents to borrow, including
books, DVDs and magazines. The library also features computer
stations, special activities, an art gallery and meeting rooms. Visits
per month range between 20,000 to 25,000.
“People do feel like they can come to the library as a meeting place,”
said library administrator Amy Whitney. The library “is central in
the area. It is close to shopping and retail, so people incorporate
it into their daily routine. ...It’s such a fun place to be. There is
always some fun activity where they can explore and learn and
expand their knowledge of the community and meet new people.”
Story-times for small children and their parents occur weekly at
the library, and other special programming for children and adults
is scheduled regularly. One popular offering is Pokétown Gym, a
trading card league for all ages where guests may play or barter
with each other.
“It hits a need that is unique in the community,” Whitney said.
When planning youth activities, the library looks at many factors.
“We are trying to identify those (educational) trends and needs
in the community and then respond with our programming and
services,” she added.
