H I S T O RY \\ // HIS TO RY e asonic Templ The former M EDERICK FR GE TA RI HE COURTESY OF Winchester Hall / COURTESY OF HERITAGE FREDERICK At 22 W. Church St., is the former Masonic Temple, built in 1901. The large scale and classical details are typical of the Italian Renaissance Revival style. In many ways this form is a more accurate representation of ancient Italian architecture than the Italianate style. The buildings are usually at least three stories tall with a flat roof. They are commonly organized into horizontal sections, with the ground floor made of rusticated stone (clearly outlined, with a textured surface). Other characteristics include pilasters (rectangular columns embedded into the wall) and round arches over windows and doors. At 106 W. Church St., is the All Saints Episcopal Church, founded in 1742. Completed in 1855, this structure was designed by New York architect Richard Upjohn, known for his Gothic Revival style; he is most famous for designing Trinity Church in New York. The pointed arched windows and doors are typical of this form. Compare this building to the Lutheran Church at 33 E. Church St., built at the same time, in the same style. Our Church Street tour ends at what is today called the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, located at 15 W. Church St. Designed by Baltimore architect Jacob Wall, the structure was built in 1848. Both this building and Winchester Hall are examples of the Greek Revival style. Wall’s classical design, including the two towers, was inspired by a monument in the Acropolis in Greece. Note how this design differs from the two Gothic Revival churches on this tour. + COURTESY 44 thefrederickguide.com All Saint OF HERITAG s Church E FREDERIC K Heritage Frederick, a private nonprofit educational and cultural organization, offers many themed tours of Downtown Frederick.
