THE MICHAEL J. FOX FOUNDATION launched in 2000 with a bold mission: to fund the science that would lead to a cure for Parkinson’ s. At the time, there were no objective disease markers, few promising therapies in the pipeline and limited understanding of what causes the disease. Patients and families urgently needed better treatments, but great scientific ideas sat unfunded.
As a patient-founded organization, the Foundation has driven forward with relentless urgency since the very beginning. Every decision we make is shaped by patient perspective and lived experience. People with Parkinson’ s are setting our Strategic Research Agenda alongside scientists and clinicians, ensuring that the projects we fund and the programs we build reflect what matters most to you— our community.
While our organization evolves to meet this transformational time in science, what has always remained constant is your unwavering support. This is a community that will not quit until a cure is found: enrolling in studies, funding new ideas, advocating for change and taking action to end Parkinson’ s for good. Your commitment inspires and motivates us to keep pushing forward every day.
Together, in just 25 years since our start, we’ ve grown from a small startup into the world’ s largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’ s research. Our portfolio now spans basic biology, cutting-edge imaging tools, genetargeting therapies and large-scale prevention studies. And we’ ve helped usher in new treatments that are improving the lives of people living with Parkinson’ s today.
