As a care partner, how do I carve out time to take care of myself?
Self-care isn’ t selfish— it’ s essential. Your energy, attention and compassion are valuable. But they’ re also finite. Carving out time for self-care as a care partner can be challenging, but self-care doesn’ t need to take a lot of time, energy or effort. Start by asking yourself what you need today. Try to identify small, doable moments in your day: a short walk, a phone call with a friend or five minutes to breathe or stretch.
How can I advocate for my loved one with PD?
Advocacy means being a voice, a witness and a supporter in their care. This might look like preparing for doctor’ s appointments together, writing down questions in advance or gently speaking up if something gets overlooked. You can also help by tracking symptoms and sharing patterns with your loved one’ s care team. Outside of the doctor’ s office, advocacy can mean asking your loved one how you can best support them and respecting their autonomy. Encourage them to stay engaged, involved and heard in the ways that feel right to them.
