Today, there are trials testing therapies to ease symptoms and to slow or stop the progression of PD. Studies are leading to new knowledge about the causes of disease, how it changes over time and how it’ s linked to genetics. Some studies need loved ones of patients and even people with no familial link to Parkinson’ s.
I started with one objective— to get into a trial for a new drug that may slow progression. Over time, I continued for more altruistic reasons— I don’ t want my children and grandchildren to have to deal with PD. Even if I think I’ m doing this for other people, with every study I benefit too. I learn something new about the disease, myself or both. And I always come away feeling a renewed sense of power to change the course of Parkinson’ s disease history.
