Of course, our staff rose to the occasion again with many creative outfits.
It has been a challenge this year to hold any Elementary assemblies, but we decided that this theme deserved a Zoom meeting with all of our students. In the assembly, we reviewed what makes someone a hero, stressing the following points:
1. someone who is brave and saves someone
2. someone who is kind, caring and helpful
3. someone to look up to
4. someone who is bold and will stand up for you and what is right
5. someone who is humble and doesn't brag
These tied in well with many different areas being covered in the curriculum, such as the Grade 2 IPC Unit ‘Significant People’ and the Grade 4 novel study Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.
Our assembly included this quote by Peter Capaldi: “Real heroes are all around us and uncelebrated.”
To me, this sums up this academic year, as all our VIS students and staff have been Heroes to come to school each day in a mask and adapt to all the necessary changes to ‘normal’ school life.
