Spotlight on

Developing Our Science Curriculum

Mr Daniel Shrewsbury

Over the past few months, we have held a series of internal professional development sessions to expose the world of science to our elementary students. We used resources such as The Wonder of Science, Mystery Science, and through doing Lab Reports. The intention was to get everyone excited about how, where, what and why we need science in our lives. Staff were taken through some science activities and then asked to think about how they can continue to incorporate science activities and learning into our IPC Curriculum. The response from staff and students was extremely positive and every grade level has been very proactive in building Science sessions into their units of work.

Interview with Jacob Romanu

As part of their ‘Moving People’ unit, the Grade 5 cohort were given the unique opportunity to speak with a gentleman named Jacob Romanu. Jacob migrated from Togo and spent some time in Hal Far Open Centre where he developed his skills as an electronics technician. He worked in an electronics store for a while and then had a chance to rent a shop space in Hamrun, which he has turned into a successful business. The students built some questions to inquire into Jacob’s story and learn, first hand, about the challenges that some migrants have when moving countries. The students also discovered how, with passion and hard work, people from different backgrounds can build a successful life with their skills.
