Message

through the Elementary grades, hands-on activities remain key in motivating students to learn and to help with their understanding of the content covered. In the pages that follow, the photos illustrate just a few ways the teachers are engaging the students in their learning. Please note that during this period when we need to adapt to the pandemic, if shared resources are being used, the students sanitize their hands before and after the activity. As well, the equipment is placed in quarantine boxes for at least 72 hours before other children use these resources.

Thank you to all the staff who have had to adapt their lessons to ensure these activities continue to happen while keeping our students safe.

Fun Learning

In previous Fort Magazines, there have been articles about the “Importance of Play” in the Early Years. As the students move through the Elementary grades, hands-on activities remain key in motivating students to learn and to help with their understanding of the content covered. The following photos illustrate just a few ways the teachers are engaging the students in their learning.

Staff felt it was very important for our students to have a chance to really get to know all the children within their grade. Although the teachers at times do combine the classes for a special outdoor lesson, we created our “Friday Focus” time which takes place after lunch every Friday. The class teachers, teaching assistants and special subject teachers meet to plan activities which mix the students up into different groups.

These activities are based around a different theme or focus and include art, music, dance and games, as well as subject based tasks. Our first Friday Focus theme was an introduction to the 8 International Primary Curriculum Personal Learning Goals. After that, we have either based the theme on a special calendar event or one of the Personal Learning Goals. Here is just a sampling of our themes and activities:
