The Bird’s nest, OK we have all experienced this before, but did you know that it can cause damage to your line. As you pull and try to pick out the bird’s nest the line will create loops and eventually turn into points that cause your line to crease. The creases will cause weak spots that with compromise your fishing line once you have fixed the fishing line. There is no way to fix the line damage after fixing a bird’s nest the only way to help this issue is to make sure the bird’s nest never really happen, or at least as little as possible. Simple practice will help with this and in time your thumb will become more sensitive to the changing situations that can lead to those bird’s nest.
Remember to re-tie as often as you can; knot failure could be more of an issue then you know. Simple take the time to re-tie your hooks and lures as often as you can. I am sure there are times when you much rather cast out as quick as you can after a nice fish to catch another, but slow down. The bigger the fish the deeper the hook and bait can end up in there mouth.
This will lead to line running over their sharp teeth and in turn cause weakening of your lines near your hooks and baits. Easy fix take your time and run about a foot or 2 of line near the hook between your fingers, and fill for the nicks and abrasions. If you find any of this it is time to re-tie that was easy.
Light is not good for your line: but did you know neither is heat. I think most of us know that prolonged exposure to fishing line will degrade it. However I was unaware that heat can have the same effect. Easy fix if you lines have been in heavy heat or light situations it is time for 2 things, change them and find a new location for storing. Be sure to keep you reels filled with fishing line in a cool dark place, this will keep your lines safe and ready to go.
