Student Stories Grey College Trust Awards 2016-17 Grey College Trust Awards Each year the Grey College Trust supports students in their endeavours The Grey College Trust, chaired by the Master of the College, exists to support the wider life and overall student experience at Grey College. Our Charitable Aims can be summarised as follows: - To provide funds towards the improvement of our buildings, facilities and grounds; - To provide assistance for any College Club or Society; - To provide Personal Development Awards, Scholarships and Bursaries for current students, allowing them to undertake extra-curricular activities and thus provide additional opportunities. One of the key ways we support our current students is through the provision of awards to allow them to complete activities which they would financially be otherwise prohibited from undertaking. During 2016-17 we supported students to undertake a diverse range of projects, some highlights of which are given here. Emma Whalley: Research expedi- tion to Indonesia this summer with Operation Walla- cea “Thanks again to the Grey College Trust for the £500 which helped towards funding my incredible 4-week re- search expedition to In- donesia with Operation Wallacea. During my trip, I gained my PADI open water qualification, and was fortunate to work alongside expert researchers and scien- tists who have inspired me to pursue this kind of career in the future.” Alice Moss – At- tendance at Ef- fective Altruism Global X Confer- ence Andrew Naracott: DUCK Expedition to India “This year’s DUCK ex- pedition to India was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and was a great experience. There were many places to explore Indian culture and heritage. Working with the charity, Wildlife SOS, involved getting up close to elephants and sloth bears who have been rescued from captivity and we helped with the daily tasks of looking after them.” Back in November, Alice attended this confer- ence, having become interested in this topic following a lecture by the Philosopher Peter Singer in Durham, and wished to see how she could integrate ideas into her dissertation. Alice comments, “I found the EAGx confer- ence extremely thought provoking and intel- lectually stimulating. I was able to explore my own views on charitable giving and how best to effect positive change on a global scale. I look forward to developing these ideas further as I continue work on my dissertation.” 12 Lucien Rhys: Participation in a National Youth Theatre Course “The Grey College Trust awarded me the fees for the Backstage Course with the National Youth Theatre. I completed the course in July/August 2017 and learnt practi- cal skills in scenic con- struction and received information regarding careers in the industry. It was a rewarding experi- ence and I am extremely grateful for the opportu- nity.”_
