Concerts, movies, malls, posh fast food joints and other such 21st century contraptions of recreation are for engineers being moulded to shape in decent towns, not for engineers doomed to survive at a place around 200 kilometres from the nearest mall or multiplex. So how have BITSians survived for half a century? The answer lies in that profound quote about life giving you lemons and you making lemonade. BITSians have developed and sustained over the years a very healthy tradition of co-curricular activities employing the various clubs and departments as their tools. The college plays host to three fests of national repute. The USP of the fests has always been the elegant manner in which the student community has conducted the fests with minimal involvement of the institution. This in turn is made possible by the various departments that work round the year with the sole purpose of ensuring impeccable organisation of the fests. Most of the departments require no pre-requisites barring a few like DVM (Department of Visual Media). Departments interact with freshers multiple times and then shortlist recruits based upon their own discretion and the extent to which their seniors take a liking to the juniors. The bunch of people grouped in a department often become the best hangout groups on campus, maybe due to the comrade ship arising out of the hectic yet fun-filled work they do. Clubs are different establishments altogether. They have been floated by the students to pursue hobbies like music, dance, poetry and even journalism. Despite being prospective Evaluation: engineers and future geeky B-School nerds BITSians do follow their passions with all the Coursera 2/5 perseverance they can muster. Most clubs are accorded due esteem by the student fraternity due to the high levels of EdX 5/5 professionalism they pursue their hobbies with. Almost all clubs conduct various recruitment tests and select students who merit selection riding their capabilities in their self-anointed hobbies. The Music Club, Dance Club, Mime Club all conduct auditions which efficiently screen new members for the clubs. The English Press Club and the Hindi Press Club too conduct recruitment tests. Even geeky engineers find a lot to keep themselves engaged thanks to the BAJA, FSAE teams and the Radio Control (RC) Club. Often engineers aspire to become social entrepreneurs in a bid to alleviate the ills gripping the nation. If social service is your thing then you will find hearty company in NSS and Nirmaan. Both the organisations have a very healthy tradition of dedicated social service; their efficiency and professionalism coupled with their strong moral fibre are potent enough to give the best NGOs a run for their money. spend time post fulfilment of academic commitments and on top of it excelling to a certain unbelievable level in whatever they choose to do. They just go from strength to strength learning from the company of their club and department comrades. The vibrant extracurricular facilities available to hone all talents ranging from quizzing to dancing and from to debating to acting is what sets a BITSian apart in the rat race that engineers are put through today.
