It’s silly season, isn’t it? Every year the same script is played out, with members of the cast gradually promoted and then let go; new members added at a steady rate.
THE TEAM
Dipto; IG, Angad, Manickam, Mohit, Pranita, Spriha, Siddhant, Tanya, Vishala, Shuja;
Every semester begins with a burgeoning list of targets, many of which never see the light of day. We always end up relapsing to past mannerisms, somehow completing minimum requirements and resolving to do better next semester.
The aforementioned list of targets is lost in a whirlwind of utterly pallid activities in the first month back. First years decide to relax and sit around gossiping with a misplaced sense of security and entitlement, scores of supposedly wizened individuals go out hunting in packs, and a bunch of politically ambitious people attempt to concoct a trite cocktail for success. Funnily enough, everyone takes themself way too seriously.
All festival plans begin with promises of the sky and end with a pat on the back for somehow managing to match the previous year’s level. An Ajay, Debolina, Kruti, Neel, Nithya, Passey, election manifesto’s level of completion is measured solely against how well the previous incumbent did. Prateek, Ramya, I’m feeling around for a smooth transition here, so bear with me. Ritvik, Sahil D, Sahil Sometimes, a new pizza place will spring out of nowhere and disrupt the general equilibrium. But if they offer copious amounts of cheese and K, Shalaka, Shashank, awesomeness, they’re warmly accepted into the fold. I’m quite anxious to see how the C’not – La Pizzeria dynamic pans out. Watch this space. Shruti, Steffie, Viraj; There’s merit in constantly innovating and changing. But sometimes there’s comfort in being able to churn out consistent results year after year. All the club-department brouhaha eventually settles down, reasonably entertaining fests take place, and most people realise how inconsequential and unfounded their early semester troubles were. So, even though we do the same stage play every year, the madness off stage Ananth, Anish, remains as crazy as ever. Madhusudan, Pratik, Here’s to another year of doing the same things, and doing them well. Somehow. Rahul, Rusheen, Soumya, Srishti, Page filled. Mission accomplished. Tanay, Tanmayee, Vijay. PS: First years, hello.
Alumni world over celebrate first ever BITSians Day
Established in 1964, BITS Pilani has been nurturing young minds for the past 50 years leading to a vast pool of alumni. This unparalleled pool is organized as the BITS Alumni Association or BITSAA and is one of the strongest alumni networks of any university. As BITS gears up to celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2014, BITSAA felt it was time to commemorate this by organizing the first ever ‘BITSian Day’ on the 2nd August, 2013. Firstly, why August 2nd? Well, BITSAA decided to observe this day on the first Friday of the month of August, which is the first month of the BITSian calendar. The day witnessed the coming together of the entire BITSian community across 4 continents. BITSAA chapters across every major city – Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, New York, London, Dubai (you name it!) organized marathons and lunch or dinner meetings for the alumni to meet and relive the nostalgic BITSian days. The alumni flaunted their college pride by wearing BITSian T-Shirts to work at companies like Synopsys, Oracle, Sabre Holdings, Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon, Flipkart and Google to name a few.
To quote an alumnus from Swindon, UK, “It was very exciting. I went to work wearing a T-shirt with the BITS logo. Seeing the pride on my face, not only my Wipro colleagues but also the client staff (British) were curious to know more about BITS. I could see BITS’ website opened on many monitors that day.”
BITSians Day celebrations across the globe, on August 2nd, 2013 People saw it as an opportunity to reconnect with friends and rekindle the multifarious joys of campus life. Social media was flooded with photos and videos of how BITSians reveled as they attended one of the largest synchronized alumni meets.
The BITSAA chapter at Jaipur held a cultural meet that witnessed participation of over one hundred people. With attendees ranging from batches of 1960 to 2011, the alumni had a gala time. A day to reunite with wingies, batch mates and BITSians from across the years, this served as a fitting precursor to a much bigger celebration being planned for sueJanuary 2014, the BITSAA Global Meet in Hyderabad.
