Western University, spends 50 to 60 days each year
in classrooms. He collaborates with teachers to design
experiences that offer young mathematicians the pleasure of
mathematical surprises and insight. He has organized a
number of symposia at the Fields Institute investigating the
use of computers as tools for teaching mathematics in the
classroom, as well as online mathematics education.
John R. Gardner, Chairman of the Board of the Fields
Institute from 1995 to 2015, holds an Honours BA from the
University of Toronto in mathematics and physics, and an MA
from Oxford University. A Fellow of the Canadian Institute of
Actuaries, he was President of Sun Life Assurance Company
of Canada (1986–96). He joined the Fields Board after serving
for nine years on the Governing Council of the University of
Toronto. A mountain trekker, he has walked many of the
European medieval pilgrims’ routes and maintains an active
interest in Spanish history and culture.
Steve Halperin is Professor of Mathematics and a former
Dean of Science (1999–2011) at the University of Maryland.
He is a former Professor and Chair of Mathematics at the
University of Toronto, a member of the first Fields Institute
Board of Directors, and a founding Principal Investigator of
Mitacs. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, of
the Fields Institute, and a Chevallier of the Ordre des Palmes
Académiques (France). With Derek Corneil, he wrote the
proposal to bring the Fields Institute to Toronto.
Ian Hambleton is the current Director of the Fields Institute.
He received his PhD from Yale University and was an
L.E. Dickson instructor at the University of Chicago before
joining McMaster University, where he served as Chair of
the Department of Mathematics for three terms. He spent
two years as a Member of the School of Mathematics at the
Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
Bradd Hart has been a professor at McMaster since 1989.
