The Math Ed Forum

“Anyone interested in mathematics education was welcome, and
there were no formal requirements to become a member.”
During the early days of the Fields Math Ed Forum, I was on
its Steering Committee and co-chaired it with Fields Deputy
Director Bradd Hart, who writes that “The Math Ed Forum
has been one of the biggest success stories for the money that
Fields has.”
The Forum arose out of an initiative by Steve Halperin
and the University of Toronto, but once it arrived at Fields,
it took on a life of its own. We developed the structure
of Saturday monthly meetings and focused on developing a
welcoming environment for representatives of various Ontario
groups interested in mathematics education.
The Forum may be unique in fostering a conversation about
teaching and learning mathematics among school teachers at
all levels of education (elementary, middle school, high school,
