Math Finance and the Fields Institute and the Financial
Mathematics seminar has been a model for other disciplines.
I served for a number of years on the Board of Directors
and the Industrial Advisory Board at Fields and recall
debating quite fiercely whether we should allow incubation of
appropriate companies at Fields. The rest is history. Fields,
thanks to John Chadam, Don Dawson, and Barbara Keyfitz,
became home to a number of successful start-ups that were
incubated at Fields and evolved from there.
I always appreciated the open-mindedness of the
mathematicians I met on the Board and the Directors who
embraced the business side of mathematics and saw the
benefits of working with industry. Congratulations Fields, you
are a wonderful Institution and a shining light in Canada.
