year of secondary school. We met at the Fields Institute for
several weeks. The discussions were urgent, highly charged,
and full of controversy, but ultimately we came up with a
working plan. I am sure the beauty of the architecture of the
building helped us to focus our energy.

Since that time I have visited fairly frequently as a
workshop or lecture attendee or as a Board member. The
Fields Institute has indeed made a great contribution to
mathematical life in Canada. I think the Institute has
been blessed with excellent leadership over the years, each
Director and Deputy Director having brought new initiatives
and scientific insights. The international reputation of the
