Creating a Field over Two
Decades

“There was a lot of advanced mathematics being used in corporate
finance and risk management as well as government finance and
economics, but the idea was to model and formulate real-world
problems that individuals face in their daily life using the language
and tools of mathematics.”
In early 2017, the non-profit Individual Finance and Insurance
Decisions (IFID) Centre will be leaving the venerable Fields
Institute, where it has been incubated for almost two decades,
and moving to a new location in cyberspace. The IFID Centre
will become an endowment-like organization with an online
presence only.
Although I personally have had the privilege of being the
executive director of the IFID Centre since its inception at the
end of the twentieth century, a bulk of the credit for its creation
