John Gardner
Development of a Governance Spirit and
Focus
The early Board meetings were a gathering of stakeholders,
with each individual member striving to gain as much as he
or she could for the constituency he or she represented. There
were members representing affiliated universities and others
representing sponsoring universities.
If my memory serves me, there was a member of the
Board who represented the mathematical societies. The host
university member had the University of Toronto agenda in
mind. It was never clear to members not affiliated with
universities how and with whom they should align themselves.
