not entirely without opposition, it has adopted an extremely
broad definition of the mathematical sciences. It has always
strongly resisted putting boundaries around mathematics.
Thus, the Institute reaches out to non-traditional areas of
the mathematical sciences, as well as to the teaching of
mathematics at all levels of education. In short, all Fields
Institute doors are open to everything mathematical.
Other components of its success are the friendliness and
organizational skills of the Institute staff. Over the past
twenty-five years, the staff has welcomed mathematicians
from around the world who return again and again for the
workshops and events.
