There was a time when the location of the Fields Institute was to be decided. Derek Corneil, Director of Research Initiatives, and Steve Halperin, Chair of Mathematics, joined me for lunch at the Faculty Club as was my daily habit. They were well prepared, having created impressive paper documentation in support of a permanent home for the Institute at the University of Toronto. At the end of lunch, asked how we should move the issue forward, I said that we had to meet the President of the University, Rob Prichard, outside his office.
And as it happened, just as we were departing the Faculty Club, Prichard was strolling by. So I pre-empted the others and just told the president that we would walk with him back to his office.
