Leading up to this year’s festival they have been running a competition for would-be writers, looking for the best short story written by an adult. Meg says “We have been looking for short stories of up to 1000 words, and the winning entry will be published in Suffolk Magazine. 2018 is a very auspicious year. It is the centenary of the First World War (2014 to 2018) and we wanted to commemorate this event with a focus on remembrance and the legacy of this confl ict. At the end of the war, the Representation of the People Act 1918 gave women over 30 who were householders (about 8.4 million women) the vote for the fi rst time. So, with 100 years of refl ection, we are looking for stories that loosely encompass the theme of `Centenary`. be based on historical fact or entirely fi ctional.” Entry to the competition has now closed but the judges were delighted with both the volume and quality of entries this year. The winner and the two runners up will be announced at the `Short Story Event` at the Felixstowe Book Festival on Saturday, 30 June at 4.30pm. “These two events defi ned the world that was to follow, and they are not unrelated. When we think of World War 1 we think of a lost generation of young men, of trenches and No Man’s Land, the horror of relentless fi ghting. With so many men away, women took up their roles in the workplace and found their voice, adding fuel to the fi re of the Suffragette movement which achieved its fi rst major success in 1918.” says judge Ruth Dugdall, “A story could take inspiration from either of these momentous events, it could Laura Horne General Manager for the Orwell Hotel says of this year’s event “We have been supporting the festival since it fi rst began so have been delighted to witness it expand and become ever more popular. We are very much looking forward to this its 6th year as the programme is the most exciting yet!” The full Felixstowe Book Festival programme is available to download as a PDF via their website www. felixstowebookfestival.co.uk The Orwell Hotel in Hamilton Road hosts the lion’s share of the Felixstowe Book Festival events and has been a staunch supporter of the event since it began. The hotel will also be running a festival café and book shop over the fi ve days. So perhaps you too will pop this fl agship event into your diary and delve into at least one or two of the Felixstowe Book Festival events happening around the town this month.
