Big changes have Dr Thérèse Coffey MP been made in recent years to try and improve response times, especially in rural areas. Despite this, we heard alarming reports of response time delays over the winter period and we are still experiencing signifi cant handover delays at hospitals. That is why it is great news that an extra 330 staff and 160 ambulances will be sought over the next three years to boost the East of England Ambulance Service thanks to an increase in funding announced last month. It has taken considerable leadership to increase the funding for the ambulance service and I am pleased to have worked towards this. Well done to the Clinical Commissioning Groups for agreeing to a six-year contract with the ambulance service. This will see funding rise from the £213.5m spent in 2017/18 to £225m in 2018/19. Subject to activity remaining as predicted, it will then rise again to £240m in 2019/20. I hope it will make a considerable difference particularly in rural areas, though I’m conscious it can still be challenging recruiting paramedics. The main problem is still about the length of time ambulances have to wait at several hospitals to transfer patients. I have raised this issue with NHS leadership and the Health Minister. I am pleased that signifi cant progress is being made but we need to keep the pressure on those hospitals. As the fi rst ever woman to be elected as a Member of Parliament in Suffolk, I was extremely proud to attend the unveiling of the fi rst female statue in Parliament Square. Suffolk’s very own Millicent Fawcett, pioneer of women’s suffrage. The statue marks the centenary of voting rights being extended to women under the Representation of the People Act 1918 and the ability for women to stand for Parliament for the fi rst time under the Parliament (Qualifi cation of Women) Act 1918. However, it is not just in Westminster that celebrations are taking place. The UK Parliament’s Vote 100 programme is helping groups from all over the country to hold EqualiTeas. Running between 18th June-2nd July EqualiTeas are a chance for any group anywhere in the country to come together to share, debate and celebrate women’s right to vote, over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. I am writing to all the WI groups in Suffolk Coastal to urge them to take part. I can think of no-one better than the Women’s Institute, with its unique role in expanding opportunities for women and who also recently celebrated its centenary, to help mark this historic event.” Rotary Club of Felixstowe Landguard 16 ADVERTISING SALES: CUSTOMER SERVICE: NEWS ARTICLES: PRINT AND DELIVERY: 19 adrian.bradshaw@fl yeronline.co.uk accounts@fl yeronline.co.uk newsdesk@fl yeronline.co.uk jon@fl yerpress.co.uk © The Felixstowe Flyer Limited 2018.
