BIG APPOINTS BREED DEVELOPMENT MANAGER AS STABILISER NUMBERS EXPAND

Continuing growth in the numbers of Stabiliser herds and performance recorded cows across the UK and Ireland has prompted the breed’s parent company, the Beef Improvement Group, to appoint Dr Duncan Pullar as Breed Development Manager.

Dr Pullar, who held prominent technical and R&D roles in the former MLC, EBLEX and most latterly AHDB Dairy, will be responsible for building on the strong platform already established for the Stabiliser cattle breed.

Commenting on his appointment, which he took up on 1 October 2015, Dr Pullar said: “I am pleased to be joining this progressive company at such a critical and exciting time. The interest in Stabilisers is clearly demonstrated by the significant growth in cattle numbers, and investment in precise breeding tools is only likely to increase the success of the breed. The launch of the new Net Feed Efficiency EBV in the near future will give beef farmers a further tool to improve their profitability.

“The primary focus of the Beef Improvement Group is to improve the profitability of beef production through breeding precision, and this goes beyond breeding efficient cattle to include the impact further up the supply chain. We are developing an integrated beef supply chain with a major multiple retailer, adding value for Stabiliser breeders and finishers, protecting them against market volatility and delivering beef of the highest eating quality to consumers.”

Dr Pullar will work alongside BIG Technical Director Richard Fuller and sales manager Ursula Taylor and will be based at BIG’s head office at Southburn, near Driffield, East Yorkshire.
