Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!

As autumn approaches, fruit growers in Armagh are preparing for harvest. Growers will have an opportunity to learn about current fruit technology developments through a top fruit workshop organised in partnership between the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) and the Northern Ireland Fruit Growers Association (NIFGA).

The workshop takes place on Tuesday 1 September 2015 at 6:00pm and is hosted by NIFGA member Edmund Allen, at his farm business on Annagora Road, near Portadown. Edmund will demonstrate the performance of a ‘Tifone Vector 1000’ orchard sprayer, which incorporates electrostatic induction charge for enhanced spray targeting and reduced drift.

Top fruit growers will be able to see first-hand other technology innovations, such as Brian Hampton’s ‘Fresh Extend’ system. This system removes ethylene gas from cold rooms improving the storage life of apples and other fresh produce. The technology won the Farm Innovations Category of the Dairymaster Rural Innovations Awards in May 2015. In addition, Mark Staplehurst will outline a new water activation system developed for fruit washing and disinfection prior to storage.

Growers will see also Controlled Atmosphere store improvements carried out at Edmund’s premises this year, while Simon Townsend of BASF will review chemical growth regulation and its influence on fruit set as observed across the UK and Ireland in 2015. The workshop will also offer growers a chance to walk orchards of different varieties, age and densities.
