35 Years
Brian Robinson Machinery (BRM
Ltd) is a traditional, family business
that has been a trusted provider for
North Yorkshire and the North East
for 35 years. Founder and MD Brian
Robinson started in a very modest way
back on the 1st January 1982 with just
one van and a 24-acre smallholding
owned by his grandparents.
» » BEFORE THAT, BRIAN
completed an apprenticeship
with Gills of Leeming Bar.
He then went to America
to fulfil a boyhood dream,
which stemmed from seeing a
‘World About Us’ programme
in 1973. The programme was
titled ‘The Yellow Trail from
Texas’ and was all about the
phenomenal wheat harvest
stretching from Texas to
the Canadian border. The
huge harvest was massively
stepped up during the Second
World War when there was
both a food and labour
shortage. In 1943/44 the then
Massey Ferguson Company
was directed by the American
government to invest in
then far bigger combines to
facilitate much better and
quicker harvests.
This captivated the young
Brian and in 1981 he realised
his dream and went to work
for one of the best American
contractors based in Kansas.
He enjoyed a fantastic eight-
month season often working
19-hour days but alongside
very generous-hearted
people.
It was on his return from the
USA he began the modest
start of Brian Robinson
Machinery. Within two years
he had built his first shed and
within four years he employed
his first full-timer Mike
Donaldson who is still with
him to this day.
‘we talk to the
farmer, understand
what he needs
and recommend
the best machine/
equipment for the
job and follow it
up with full after
sales service
and instruction’
