Richard and Jim went into
pigs on a bed and breakfast
basis through Cranswick Mill.
“Cranswick had started
producing pigs on an outdoor
reared, welfare friendly
system,” says Richard. “So we
went down that route for a
while before shifting to ducks
that we reared for Cherry
Valley and then to chickens
that we now rear from day-olds
and take to 16 weeks again on
contract.
“We’ve been back with bed
and breakfast pigs for quite a
while and although we’ve been
with other companies we’re
back with Cranswick through
the umbrella of Wold Farms.
Our buildings have capacity
for 1,000 weaners and 1,000
fatteners at any one time.
It’s a 12-week cycle. We get
the weaners at 7 kilos. After
12 weeks they go into the
fattening building and the next
weaners come in. We provide
the straw, the management
and the buildings.”
The arable, pigs and poultry
sectors provide the main share
of the farm income but Jim’s
Limousin herd still has its place. C

cows and recalls how he started

that I chose them. I’d gone to MY
buy a bull at Carlisle because CY
I was stuck with some heifers CMY
I wanted to get in calf. I saw all

these Limousins. There were
about 250 of them and I fell
in love with the breed. I’d had
a commercial suckler herd of
around 60-65 cows that I had
been crossing with mainly

Belgian Blue bulls, but I’d

decided that by going pedigree
I could add value, so we sold Y
the commercials and went into

pedigree Limousins in the early

1980s.

long time to get up the ladder.
