Green’s Farm Supplies Ltd Tag Team adds to Green’s service with a smile Chris Berry talks with Chris Jeffery at Greens’ Farm Supplies in Thirsk Auction Centre. » » I’VE WRITTEN ABOUT QUITE literally thousands of people involved in farming and farm related businesses over the past 26 years since I started in 1991 and I’ve made some great personal friends, taking the story writing beyond the farm gate or office and on to really wonderful bonds whereby you can chat about anything and everything. I’m not trying to overplay things here. I still only generally get together when there’s something to discuss or if I meet up at a show or event, some might not even consider that as a massive friendship but it works for me and I’m certain it works for those who consider this the same way. Two of my best friends in this regard are Chris and Kate Jeffery. I’ve seen them work so hard at their business of Green’s Farm Supplies in Thirsk and Northallerton, but more importantly for me they have retained a natural, friendly balance to life and I’ve recently been fortunate enough to help them with the promotion of a new aspect to their business this year called Lazer Tags. We’ve laughed, had fun together and got on with the jobs in hand. It’s that kind of spirit and way of working that sets them apart from many - and in developing friendships you also find out more about what makes people tick. Just ask Chris about their Whitebred Shorthorns at Spring View Farm, Thornton on the Hill and watch his face light up. He and Kate love their livestock and they are smitten with contributing to the breed’s survival and increasing its number. We’ll save a bit more of that for later on in this story, but first let’s look at how the business has developed from starting out in a little bothy selling animal health products opposite Northallerton livestock market. ‘Kate and I started in that tiny little cabin in 2004 selling a few animal medicines to farmers. The business grew and when Thirsk 22 Summer 2017 www.farmers-mart.co.uk Farmers Auction Mart decided to relocate we made what for us was a very bold decision to base ourselves here in 2006. We took the biggest unit available and we’ve since expanded outwards, upwards, sideways and all over the place. We now provide everything from a tin of cat food right up to a multi-thousand pound cattle crush handling system.’ ‘Our business is still mostly farm-related but we also now have a very busy Country Store that is expanding all the time. It’s primarily animal care for companion animals such as dogs, cats and all other small animals. We stock all the relevant feed, accessories and animal medicines for those animals as well as for farm livestock. Poultry feed and accessories have been added too along with small animal housing.’ ‘We’re also now developing a reputation for quality plants for the garden and I can see that increasing in the coming years. Good access and a great location are two of the main reasons why people come here from all walks of life and our business with the general public has grown from a few tins of cat food and bags of dog food to something that now makes up nearly a quarter of our annual turnover.’ Providing farmers with a great service, listening to their needs and supplying the right products is still the hub of what Green’s Farm Supplies is all about and in Spring this year Chris and Kate launched a new arm to their burgeoning enterprise with Lazer Tags.
