other three part-time staff we
have and as soon as he’s home
from school he’s out there
straight away.
‘Since we went on to keeping
the milking herd indoors we
now have 27 acres of wheat
in addition to our grassland.
The wheat provides straw
and feed for the cows. We
use Houseman’s of Darley as
contractors for the grass silage
and get three cuts.’
Andrew is hoping that with
the milk price now hopefully
stabilising that dairy farmers
don’t over produce in an
attempt to rectify their books
quickly. He feels it might send
the price down again.
‘I think we all need to learn
by what has happened in the
past few years, go canny and
gradually recoup what many of
us have lost. I’d sooner make
a few less litres at 30p than a
lot at 18p. It’s been a tough two
years and I for one hope it’s a
long time before that happens
again and preferably never
again.’
Alison is from Melmerby.
She and Andrew met through
friends at a wedding where
Alison was a bridesmaid
and they married 13 years
ago. Alison has a nursing
background but came away
from her career when Geoffrey
was born.
