He also works alongside another mainly silage agricultural contractor and he looks after grass harvest related tasks and others including silaging, mowing, ploughing, raking, drilling and re-seeding. ‘The majority of our land here at Firs Farm is between 800-1000ft and we grow wheat, barley, oats and fodder beet. We get early winters and late springs. That usually means if we are not drilled up by the first week in October we might as well leave it in the bag.’ The farm is in the entry level stewardship scheme that has a couple more years to run. Jim grew up at Snowden Hill in Oxspring near Penistone and Angela (nee Rowe) also comes from farming stock in Stannington where she was brought up. She helped out on her uncle’s milk round and her grandma’s farm. Jim and Angela were both heavily involved in the Young Farmers’ Club movement and their three offspring followed suit, although not in Yorkshire. ‘I was with Bradfield YFC and Jim was with Penistone YFC,’ says Angela. ‘I was secretary at both clubs and Jim is a past chairman of Penistone. When we moved here our children became involved with Derbyshire Federation and were all members of Hope Valley YFC.’ Jim and Angela have three children: Ruth (32), Helen (30) and John (28). Their next generation is imminent with Helen expecting at time of going to press!
