have about 80 Galloways
and Belted Galloway. We take
them through to 36-38 months
and they are all grass fed the
traditional way. We buy what
is right for the job and that
for us is mainly heifers. If we
don’t have any fat cattle of our
own just right we will buy at
Selby livestock market on a
Wednesday.
‘Beef is our biggest volume
sale and we kill out around
16-17 every week rising to
20-25 at Christmas. We use
Worsley’s wholesale butchers
in Spenborough for killing
out of cattle; Ralph Wood at
Scammonden for lambs; and
John Penny at Rawdon for
pigs. Fat lambs are bought at
Holmfirth livestock market and
fat pigs at Selby. We also buy
stock at Wharfedale Farmers
Auction Market at Otley and
CCM in Skipton.’
The addition of Cockley Hill
Farm has brought the Haigh’s
into corn growing with drying
and storage facilities.
‘We use the corn on the
cattle and Charles plans on
growing more this year. He also
ploughs, drills and combines.
We use contractors for round
baling.’
WILDLIFE FLOURISH HERE
Richard proudly picked up
the Tye Trophy award from the
Yorkshire Agricultural Society
last year for West & South
Yorkshire. It’s another feather in
his cap.
‘This is an ideal farm for
encouraging wildlife. We’ve
planted a couple of miles of new
hedgerows and a lot of trees.
We’ve created woodland on
what was rough land and put in
five ponds. We have kingfishers,
swallows, wild ducks, plenty
more hedgerow wildlife and
birds. It’s a great thing for me as
I love the countryside. We also
have a shoot on the farm and
have a meet for the Rockwood
Harriers.’
While Richard’s dream of
farming to the extent he does
today may have exceeded his
expectations, he is quick to
point out that it would never
have come about without the
realisation that he had to move
away from his first love.
‘I would never have done
this without the meat trade, the
chest freezer boom and Haigh’s
Farm Shop. We work very
hard, all of us, and fortunately
we have now brought about
something really special.
Catherine and I are also very
fortunate to be able to have built
a lovely family. We have eight
grandchildren.’
