‘ We used to do a lot of showing but it got to the stage where it was nearly taking over our lives and although we loved it we needed a bit of a rest as things were getting neglected slightly .’
‘ We stopped for a year or two but Annie and Mary have taken to showing and they are now getting on with showing the sheep and Tommy ’ s girlfriend Grace has started showing the cattle with their calves . Grace helps out on the farm too and has all the cows on her phone and can pick out cows so that we can work out which are best and which will have to go .’
‘ I ’ m not technologically advanced but they all are , and it is helping with us pushing for good bloodlines .’
‘ Our cattle are a variation of British Blue X and Limousin X cows . We are currently running three Limousin bulls and two Blue bulls . Our calves are born in February and
March and sold at Darlington and Barnard Castle in October and November .’
‘ Ours is a summering farm so if we have the calves born in spring they are out at grass through summer . We then give them a little creep to get them saleable and aim to get the cows through winter as cheaply as possible until they have another calf . It ’ s the only way we can make them viable on these hills .’
Keith says that the farm ’ s grass achieves one main cut and a second cut on some of the fields .
‘ The longer first crop is for silage for the cattle . The second shorter one is for the sheep . We try to do a bit of reseeding every year with new leys , higher digestible grasses that are more prolific and higher value – and we grow a few turnips for the store lambs in late summer , which goes back to grass the following year .
