All of the male calves leave the farm at a month old and go to a local rearer, on a Buitelaar scheme.
‘ We do as much of the work on the farm as we can, including all our land and silage work and a little bit of contract silaging. The majority of our land is down to grass, but we have 40 acres of corn.’
While Will was away at college he spent a year on a dairy farm near Stafford where they grew pumpkins. When he returned he thought he’ d give it a try. This year he grew 4.5 acres of pumpkins using 24,000 plants rather than seeds as he had used previously.
‘ It involved a week of watering after planting and we put them into plastic as well, which has kept the weeds down and it has been the best crop we’ ve had.’
‘ I started six years ago with 300-400 pumpkins. It has grown so much and it doesn’ t seem to matter how many I plant they always sell out! We also planted an acre of sunflowers this year.’
‘ It’ s pretty much all heavy clay land around here, so I work out which is going to be best for the pumpkins. We had a maize maze previously but with the very wet backends it turned more into a Tough Mudder!’
Will has two sisters. Kathryn lives in Bakewell and Rebecca is close by and helps out on the farm as well as handling the paperwork side of the business. Will and his partner Rosie live in the bungalow next door to his mum and dad’ s farmhouse.
‘ We also have 50 hens that lay eggs that we also sell. We are planning on a second vending machine going in soon.’
