Derbyshire Council were initially pushing
for the building to be on a brown field site
in town, which of course for a business
such as this just wouldn’t work. After
many meetings, drawings and consulta-
tions the plans were finally approved, part
of which was residential planning
for the old site.
As with all large projects
there is a plan with con-
tingencies built in and the
new Cubley Depot was
no different in encoun-
tering the unforeseen
and the extra’s. Firstly,
the site, although reason-
ably firm, has shifting sands
which meant the sinking of
hundreds of concrete piles for
ground stabilisation. The stipulation for
rural buildings of this size and enormous
roof span is the need for an attenuation
pond, this is to cope with all the run-off
rainwater which can be considerable as
you would imagine. Regulations stipulate
the pond must be big enough to hold a “100
Year Storm”. The pond, when you see it,
looks like part of the moat from a medieval
castle! It will look different once all the
landscaping and tree planting is complete.
Would you believe it, two weeks ago in that
relentless wet period, that 100 Year storm
was almost a reality as it nearly filled the
pond.

The energy efficiency side was a con-
siderable undertaking as ground source
pumps have been installed which entailed
the laying of 6,000 meters of pipe across
this huge 6.5 acre site. The system is con-
nected in the building to brand new, state
of the art, soundless, Volcano fans
which keep the parts depart-
ment warm as well as feeding
all the radiators, along
with a certain amount of
underfloor heating which
heats the workshop,
this was only possible as
it is a wholly new-build
building. To complete this
is a large expanse of solar
panels which takes care of all
the electrical power needs.
Outside, there is a large area for both
customer parking and storage, plus when
the grass is fully grown a demonstration
area for tractors etc but also for the ground
care and construction equipment which is
now an integral part of the Russell product
line up. As the web-site says, “A Machine
for Every Job”.
The layout of the building has been
designed from scratch, this includes the
huge workshop that will easily accommo-
date a combine in one corner! Still leaving
loads of space for balers, tractors, you
name it. The new workshop massively
increases the service capacity on offer.
