Mark left School in 1990 and did 2 years YTS on a large Mule farm then followed up a year’s course at Bishop Burton. As luck would have it the Friday he completed the course at Bishop Burton he was contacted by a contractor and ended up doing 8 weeks round baling. This led to Mark doing 6 years as a contractor and due to his Uncle’s bad accident which meant he couldn’t farm full time, Mark then joined Haregill full time. Although since 1990 Mark has worked with Tim Dunn in his scanning busi- ness, Breckhouse Enterprises for 3 to 4 weeks a year at the peak time and still does to this day. Vicky as well as helping on the farm when possible also works for Mark’s mother who runs a very successful outside catering com- pany. Farming is an all consuming 24/7 way of life however this is a very close-knit family that recognises that time must be spent together and Mark is a firm believer that a day of rest is vital in order to function properly. This fits in well with the fact that they are a Methodist family and Sunday is spent at church in the morning and then family time in the afternoon for days out. They do say that all work and no play make Jack a dull boy – well Mark also finds time for photography and being Chairman of the Masham Camera club, as well as being very active with the Masham Players, means he’s always on the go. Talking to Mark you get an overwhelming sense of passion, drive and contentment so I asked him if there were future plans for the farm. “Oh Yes” was the answer. Mark would ideally like to increase his acreage if the opportunity arises and also have a greater concentration of Whitefaces in his flock for an increase in return. As Robert isn’t getting any younger Mark is exploring the possi- bility of taking on an apprentice in the near future.
