“I was expecting with Martin
at the time and I recall him telling
me that he would have liked to
have had a little girl. Neither of
us managed it. It was a great day
and one that no-one here will
ever forget. He also started the
Moorcock Senior Fell Race. We’d
love to see him again one day, so
if you’re reading this please come
and see us.”
Edward van Cutsem was
this year’s show president. The
show moved from being held
on a Saturday to a Sunday three
years ago, which has helped with
attendance. The Pedley family
makes up a large proportion of
the show committee with Jim, Liz
their sons and wives all involved.
They are quick to point to the
others who give up their time
too.
“We have a really good show
secretary Colin Luckett who
is not a sheep farmer. He has
made a tremendous difference
and has improved our trade
stand representation. Obviously
John (Bland) as chairman is also
involved heavily like us and then
there are Graham Scarr and his
daughter Kelly and Brian Horner
and his wife Carol.
“We always used to only
attract Swaledale sheep and had
become known as a specialist
Swaledale show like Muker, but
although we are still a specialist
show for the breed we now have
five breeds – Swaledale, Mule,
Blue Faced Leicester, Rough Fell
and Texel. When the Sedbergh
Show finished we asked whether
the Rough Fell breeders wanted
to bring their breed to our
show.”
Last year saw quite possibly
the youngest handler ever of
the overall show champion (and
probably ever at any show) – Jim
and Liz’s grandson George who
was just 18 months old at the
time. He was showing a Texel!
Surely that’s sacrilege in this
area of Yorkshire? A Texel ruling
supreme in Swaledale and Mule
heartland? He won again this
year with a Texel. The family
pulled off a trio of championships
with Texel, Blue Faced Leicester
and Mule – with the Leicester
taking supreme champion at
Moorcock.
It has been a successful year
all round for the Pedleys with
champions at Ravenstonedale
and Brough shows prior to
Moorcock, plus the safe arrival
of their sixth grandchild Katy
Elizabeth.
Liz also runs a holiday cottage
nearby where there are six
cottages together. It’s less than
a mile from Garsdale Station and
she has been known to pick up
visitors from the railway station.
The Moorcock Inn still plays a
vital part in the lives of everyone
in the area and Liz reports that
the locals who have taken it over
recently are doing a great job.
“Andrew Bussey and Jo
Cox came at Easter and have
transformed it inside. They know
the area, the people and what is
needed around here. They also
ran the bar on our Centenary
Night two days before the show
and served our show judges
lunches. We wish them well. It’s
good to see the Moorcock carry
on its great history!”
