The chances are that many won’t, but you may have heard of Garsdale Head where there is a station on the SettleCarlisle railway and you may have even visited the Moorcock Inn, which gave its name to Moorcock Show? It’s going west from Hawes on the A684 but you turn right at the Moorcock Inn rather than driving on to Sedbergh. This is a wild and woolly place, beautiful in the spring and summer, not bad in early autumn but at times fearsome in winter as the weather turns its vice-like grip. It’s where the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales turns eminently rugged, more akin to the harsh bleakness of the ridges in the North York Moors. It’s where the Pedley family has lived for generations. Jim Pedley’s parents Henry and Elizabeth made their long distance move from next door at Blades Farm in 1963 to come to Yore House where they have grown their farming enterprise to incorporate two more farms in Kirkby Stephen 14 miles north of the home farm and where sons Stephen and Martin farm in partnership with Jim and wife Liz. Their middle son David farms separately at Winton near Kirkby Stephen. The rivers Ure and Eden both start within 4 miles of Yore House and the Ure runs right down the farm’s hillside. It’s a countrygoers delight and the little bridge to be crossed just before the farmhouse adds even more character to their tenanted farm. “Mum and dad moved here from Blades because this was a larger farm,” says Jim. “I’m the youngest of four sons. I have two sisters too. Liz and I got together over 40 years ago at a dance in Dent. She’s a farmer’s daughter from Sedbergh. “In all we have around 1,230 acres which is grass and rough stuff. Up here at Yore is regarded as Severely Disadvantaged Less Favoured Area status. Here we’re at 1,100ft above sea level and at the other two farms we’re at 450ft. Our main enterprise is sheep. We have the
