Where sheep
reign supreme
Chris Berry talks with Jim and
Liz Pedley at Yore House
»»DO YOU KNOW WHERE
Lunds is? The chances are that
many won’t, but you may have
heard of Garsdale Head where
there is a station on the SettleCarlisle railway and you may have
even visited the Moorcock Inn,
which gave its name to Moorcock
Show? It’s going west from
Hawes on the A684 but you turn
right at the Moorcock Inn rather
than driving on to Sedbergh.
This is a wild and woolly
place, beautiful in the spring and
summer, not bad in early autumn
but at times fearsome in winter
as the weather turns its vice-like
grip. It’s where the beauty of the
Yorkshire Dales turns eminently
rugged, more akin to the harsh
bleakness of the ridges in the
North York Moors.
It’s where the Pedley family has
lived for generations. Jim Pedley’s
parents Henry and Elizabeth
made their long distance move
from next door at Blades Farm
in 1963 to come to Yore House
where they have grown their
farming enterprise to incorporate
two more farms in Kirkby Stephen
14 miles north of the home farm
and where sons Stephen and
Martin farm in partnership with
Jim and wife Liz. Their middle son
David farms separately at Winton
near Kirkby Stephen.
The rivers Ure and Eden both
start within 4 miles of Yore House
and the Ure runs right down
the farm’s hillside. It’s a countrygoers delight and the little bridge
to be crossed just before the
farmhouse adds even more
character to their tenanted farm.
“Mum and dad moved here
from Blades because this was
a larger farm,” says Jim. “I’m the
youngest of four sons. I have two
sisters too. Liz and I got together
over 40 years ago at a dance in
Dent. She’s a farmer’s daughter
from Sedbergh.
“In all we have around 1,230
acres which is grass and rough
stuff. Up here at Yore is regarded
as Severely Disadvantaged
Less Favoured Area status.
Here we’re at 1,100ft above
sea level and at the other two
farms we’re at 450ft. Our main
enterprise is sheep. We have the
