which we work at getting to 620
kilos. Most of our Stabilisers
presently come from the Lleyn
Peninsula. They have the grass
and breeding expertise with
suckler cows and that means
bulls to them are a pain. They
come to us at around 350 kilos.
“We don’t mix customers’
cattle so we have a range of pen
size varying from 20 to 120 cattle
capacity. We charge the farmers
a fixed cost day rate for keeping
the beast and then a feed cost
that is set and runs as that price
through the season.
“We offer a fabulous service
to our breeder customers
recording and having available
to them all of the information
they need requiring feed and
weight gain. We use a Keenan
wagon that is fitted with all of the
on board Pace IC technology.
The breed men want to see
how well each beast does so
that they can relate growth
performance to a certain bull or
calf. The information we provide
could then take their breeding
off in a new direction. We weigh
the cattle every 30 days and
calculate the feed conversion.”
Doug is now working with
the likes of Woodheads and
Dovecote Park for the major
supermarkets and believes that
the benefits of him being able to
mix and match cattle they want
with what he has on farm on
behalf of his farmer customers
is showing benefits in transport
efficiency as well as holding a
little more sway in the ability
to provide the supply when
demand is there.
“Our Pace IC system on the
Keenan is why we took the
Innovator award last year and
it is still a winner for us with our
customers. Everything we put
into the wagon and everything
we then put out mixed is
recorded. We run monthly
invoicing to our farmer customers
and all of the information is
absolutely transparent. We’re
looking to move that even
further forward so that the figure
for how much profit there is
in each animal per day is also
calculated.”
Doug’s great grandfather
started at Osgodby Grange in
1919. His grandfather Raymond
Simpson then took up the
reins. Doug’s mother married
Alan Dear from Suffolk after
they had met at Wye College.
Doug and Pam have two
young daughters Charley and
Molly. Doug and Alan have
one full-time employee Taylor
MacVean (19) who completed his
apprenticeship at Askham Bryan
College.
