for nine weeks on a bed and
breakfast system taking them
from seven kilos to 45 kilos for
Ian Mosey Livestock.
The key nowadays with many
successful farms is diversification
for longevity, revenue generation
and protection. This is where
Beadlam Grange really has
excelled. Firstly, they secured
a contract with the local council
where they take all the green
waste, compost it and spread it
on their own land. In 2006 they
put in 37 acres of Miscanthus
which takes time to establish
but once in, it grows with little
maintenance or inputs. The
leaves drop in winter leaving
the cane to be harvested every
Spring, yielding about 110 tonnes
which is on contract to Drax
power station to be mixed with
coal for greener energy. An
amazing fact Mark came across
was that all 110 tonnes is burnt in
just 25 seconds!
A shoot is run on the farm
organised by a local syndicate,
and Mark joins in when he can.
As if all that wasn’t enough,
they opened the Farm Shop on
the 6 June 2007. This really is
an authentic Farm Shop as it is
not a new build but a conversion
of old barns and cowshed, with
most of the original troughs and
byres being kept and utilised.
When you sit down at the tables
you really get the feeling of
being in the farm. The shop has
everything, including a busy
restaurant seating 36 upstairs
and 37 downstairs. They have
varied menus, with all meals
prepared fresh every day using
all their own meat, as well as a
children’s area, fresh vegetables,
local produce including all kinds
of preserves, wines, fresh bread,
fish, sausages, pies and more.
Mark told me: “in this
business, as in any kind of
farming, everyone has to work
hard, be forward thinking and
recognise and take opportunities
at the time when they come
along. My wife, Jenny brings so
much innovation and attention
to detail into the farm shop
and she deserves all the praise
for making it such a success
over the last eight and a half
years. I am lucky to have such a
wonderful wife”

he left school. Paul joined them
