We never leave a job until the customer is happy.” But Andrew and Tom are only too aware of poor standards in some businesses. “We’ve often had to follow jobs that have been poorly done and put them right,” he explained. The business operates out of Russell Farm at Otley in the Wharfedale Valley and covers a radius of around 20 miles in both West and North Yorkshire. Another sideline to the main business is the installation of traditional willow or hazel hurdles and trellises. Andrew admits that one of the current frustrations in the business is the quality of timber that is now available owing to changes in timber treatment products. “We always use the best quality we can get,” he said, “because fencing isn’t something you want to be doing too often – it should stand the test of time and do the job it is designed for.” Andrew has a son Jacob (12) who is keen to study engineering – his grandfather was an engineer. “I don’t know if he will want to get involved with the business later on,” said Andrew, “but I don’t mind – so long as he is happy with the choices he makes, that’s fine by me.” Chevin Fencing Russell Farm, Leeds Road, Otley, LS21 1DL Tel [phone].
