POWER STEERING
IN DEMAND
“One of the most popular
additions to Honda ATVs in
recent years has been power
steering,” Tom added. “It’s
a very popular option for hill
farmers on rough terrain as the
stress and strain of gatheringin on a fell, dropping into and
coming out of holes, can be
somewhat reduce. This means
there is less kickback on the
handlebars. In the past two
years we have sold many more
with power steering and the
common feedback we have had
from customers is that once
they have experienced it, they
will never go back to a nonpowered machine.
“All ATVs are becoming
more complicated. Emission
rules have meant that every
manufacturer is constantly
battling to make theirs better
than the rest.”
Honda holds an impressive
56% market share of all new
ATVs sold in the UK – a figure
that is more than double that of
their nearest competitor.
“It means Honda is the
dominant force,” said Tom,
“and that translates into
more people looking for used
Hondas. Every year we sell
around 100 new and 100
used Honda ATVs from our two
depots.” Complementing all his
ATV sales has been the high
number of the innovative range
of C – Dax accessories that
he has supplied to many of his
customers
Tom opened the new
premises in Hawes after having
traded at Ingleton as a service
centre (non-franchised) for
eight years.
“Both centres are now official
Honda franchised dealerships
and I currently employ nine staff
including myself. I’m looking
for two mech anics at present,
one for each of the centres. We
are extending the workshop at
York to cope with our increased
workload. We have been very
busy on the service side all year
so far and have 10 days’ work
in front of us at any one time.”
Last year Tom took on a new
product – the JCB Workmax
utility vehicle. It is a side-byside model with two seats and
he has enjoyed success with
them.
“Farmers are finding them
useful for feeding livestock,
but what they really like is that
they tend to be diesel-powered
and that means they can fill
up at the red diesel tank in
the yard. In some respects
that is working against the
ATVs because they are petroldriven.
“One of the biggest problems
rurally is that with so many of
the smaller garages closing,
farmers have to travel a lot
further to buy petrol. It’s
becoming more of a challenge
certainly.”
The figures bear out Tom’s
words as ATV sales have
declined 12% per year for the
past couple of years, but while
he is concerned, he is not
unduly worried just yet.
“I believe the market will
come back around. There
may be fewer manufacturers
in the marketplace in the long
term but those who stay in
the sector will be the ones
who do the job to the best of
their ability and look after their
customers. That’s what we
do.”
