JAMES PRATT
“Dad, my uncle and
granddad always entered the
local agricultural shows and I
suppose that is where Richard
and I get the bug from. We
have enjoyed great success in
recent times at Wensleydale
Show, North Yorkshire County
Show, UK Dairy Expo Show
and Northern Expo. This year
we had a second place at the
Great Yorkshire Show in the
senior dry cow class.
“We breed for type, but not
a show type. We’re looking
for strong cattle with good
feet, legs and udders. We sell
cows, heifers and bulls through
our local livestock market just
down the road in Leyburn as
well as at the pedigree sales in
Carlisle. We also sell privately
to a number of regulars.
“We are bringing in new cow
families via AI and ET. We are
finding that the embryo work
means we produce new stock
faster.”
James is also a respected
dairy cow judge and in
recent times has stood at
Kilnsey, Ryedale, Egton and
Osmotherley. It’s another facet
of the industry that he enjoys,
as he explained.
‘We’re looking

legs and udders’
“I competed in stockjudging
for Masham YFC until last year
when I reached the age limit.
I have been second-placed at
national level and have won at
Cledale District and at county
level. In my final year I was
third at national.”
As well as the traditional
black and white Holsteins
James is particularly proud of
their achievements with red
and white Holsteins.
“They are something different
and are well sought after,” he
said. “We also have a Jersey
cow and daughter. At last year’s
Wensleydale Show we had
both the interbreed and reserve
interbreed champions with both
a Holstein and our Jersey cow.”
And at the recent North East
All Breeds Dairy Calf Show at
Thirsk Livestock Centre, the
Pratts had champion Holstein.
James and Richard may
well not be able to afford to
run Studdah Holsteins fulltime at present, but they are
maintaining the good name
that has been built up in the
past 40 years of pedigree
cows at Bellerby.
