JAMES PRATT
Dreams are the
foundation
Chris Berry talks with
James Pratt of Bellerby.
Studdah Farm at Bellerby
has a great reputation both
in the show ring and in
breed sales. The farm has
been owned by the Pratt
family since 1964 when
James Pratt moved from
Marsett, near Semerwater.
Alan and his brother Maurice
took over the farm from James
and farmed in partnership
until Maurice emigrated to
Canada.
Today, it is Alan’s sons James
and Richard who handle
most of the day-to-day work
and they are partners in the
business with Alan and his
wife Edith.
Studdah runs to 180 acres
and they have a herd of
100 milking cows and 140
followers. It is not big enough
to warrant either James or
Richard taking a full-time
income from the farm and so
they both have other income
streams.
“When we lost our cows as
a result of Foot and Mouth in
2001 it made us all think about
what we wanted to do and
how we wanted to progress.
I was only 15 at the time and
Richard was 21. If it hadn’t
been for us being here and
mum and dad seeing how
keen we were to carry on dairy
