seen more as a dual-purpose
breed than purely a beef breed
up to 20 years ago and it was
a case of which way it should
go for the future. The positive
side of the milk aspect of the
breed is that it has the same
quality as a Jersey so you’re
giving your calves high quality
milk.
“Our commercial herd is
predominantly South Devon
X Salers and we keep both
herds completely separate,”
he said.
What this couple have
accomplished is a lesson to all
those who want to farm and
build up their own livestock
operation from nothing. Owing
to family circumstances,
the farm that Paul might
have expected to take over
disappeared. But he didn’t
let that disappointment get
him down: instead he started

building the farm business that
is flourishing today.
