Also at the farm gate are the eggs! “I started with just four hens when I was a teenager. It was just before I went to Bishop Burton College and I was already thinking of diversification ideas. One option I had in mind was freerange hens. I soon decided that only certain people made money that way and it generally wasn’t the farmer. “I’ve kept it at a level that is manageable and it ticks over quite nicely. We have 250 free-range hens and keep them in small groups.
