BEAUTRY FARM 47 when a gimmer shearling went down to Worcester and made 16,000 guineas in 2016 , still the record for a Texel female there .
“ At one time we had 200 Texel ewes , but now we ’ ve gone a little quiet with those and we are only lambing 20 ewes – 15 Texels , 5 Beltex . We started with Beltex in 2006 . We ’ ve now taken the pedigree route of the less you have the better you can do , by concentration on quality .
The diversification interests on the farm are still there , but with a slightly different emphasis from the Curries themselves today .
“ We now let the swimming pool and the veterinary side , and we ’ ve converted a barn to a holiday cottage . It all provides additional incomes .
“ The farm is in an HLS scheme on a rolling year to year basis and we have wildflower meadows and traditional uplands meadows across 25 acres ; wetlands on land at Long Preston ; and SSSI land on river banking . I ’ m not taking up any SFI unless they improve the offer .
“ We cut our meadows from the middle of July and get around 350 bales of haylage if we can .
“ We both enjoy watching horse racing at courses like Wetherby , and of course Cheltenham , but Cartmel is probably our most fun day out . The atmosphere there is fantastic . We both used to do hunting and Point to Point ourselves and won a few races . We also trained a few Pointers when running a livery business .
Gail tells of one great success they had in breeding horses .
“ We had a brood mare that bred us 4 foals . The second foal won at Aintree , Kelso , Wetherby .
“ My father , David Rollinson , was a successful polo player too .
“ We also have a successful daughter , Grace who works in a completely different environment . Grace is currently working in West End theatre stage managing and directing . At the moment she ’ s involved with the Take That Musical and is working on A Witness For the Prosecution at Southbank Theatre .
